About Northville Township, Michigan
Northville Township covers 16.57 square miles of far northwestern Wayne County, about 27 miles from downtown Detroit and 20 miles from Ann Arbor, and its defining landmark is 414 acres of ground the residents paid to keep empty. That land held the Northville Regional Psychiatric Hospital from 1952 to 2003, and after an $800 million private development plan stalled, voters bought the site themselves in 2009 and turned it into Legacy Park. The rest of the township pairs the 944 acres of Maybury State Park, once a tuberculosis sanatorium, with the North American headquarters of Tenneco and ZF and a school district whose South Asian population jumped 260 percent in a single decade.
Local Landmarks and Attractions
- Legacy Park, 414 acres of former Northville Regional Psychiatric Hospital land along Seven Mile Road, bought by township voters in 2009 and kept as open natural space with trails.
- Maybury State Park, 944 acres of rolling terrain, meadows and mature forest, Wayne County's first state park (1975), with three surviving stone and brick doctors' residences from the sanatorium era.
- Maybury Farm, operated by the Northville Community Foundation since 2005.
- Tenneco's headquarters campus at 15701 Technology Drive.
- ZF Group's North American Operations base.
Local History
- Local residents split from Plymouth Township in 1898 to form Northville Township. It became a charter township in 1985.
- In 1907 the deadliest passenger train crash in Michigan history killed 34 people about a quarter mile east of Napier Road and a quarter mile north of Five Mile Road, in what is now the township.
- Maybury Sanatorium was built here as a tuberculosis hospital, named for Detroit real estate investor William H. Maybury, and grew to more than 40 buildings including infirmaries, residences, children's playgrounds and a school. Medical advances cut tuberculosis cases and the sanatorium closed in 1969.
Culture and Community
- Northville High School, opened in 2000, fields the Mustangs in orange and black and competes in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association. The district's motto is "Tradition of Excellence, A World of Possibilities."
- Maybury Farm runs wagon rides, a corn maze with extended October evening hours, goat yoga on Saturday mornings at 10:30 a.m., Watch-Me-Grow education programs, storytelling and birthday parties from April through October.
- Maybury State Park's trails carry hikers, mountain bikers, cross-country skiers and horseback riders, and its paved paths follow the old sanatorium roadways. The park also has pond fishing, picnic areas, playgrounds and stables.
